French toast is an easy breakfast dish, an ultimate comfort food. Though it is made with very simple ingredients, the taste is divine. Well, if you have any leftover bread, do try this amazing french toast recipe today.
French toast is just day-old bread dipped in a milk and egg mixture. In my recipe, I have added a little cream to the milk which makes an already amazing dish taste even better. In addition to the milk ,cream and eggs, cinnamon is the usual spices of choice. And that pinch of salt at the end rounds off all the other flavors.
I did not add any sugar to the milk as I was serving the french toast with maple syrup and a sprinkling of powdered sugar.
Bread
As for the bread itself, the classic options are brioche, challah, Texas toast or even sourdough. I didn’t have any of those, so I just used what I had: the regular white bread. And it came out perfectly.
If you are using regular, thinner slices of bread, do a little prep work ahead to get the perfect French toast. Since the thin slices can easily get soggy, toast them in a toaster or a skillet for a short while. Don’t let the color change which could make the slices hard and prevent the slices from absorbing too much of the liquid.
You can serve french toast with butter, maple syrup, powdered sugar, honey, berries or other fruits or just plain.
French Toast
Ingredients
- 10-12 Regular white bread, or any bread of your choice
- ¾ cup Milk (I used 2% milk)
- ¼ cup Heavy cream
- 3 large Eggs
- ½ tsp Cinnamon powder
- 1 tsp Pure vanilla extract
- 1 pinch Salt
- 2-3 tsp Sugar, optional
- Oil or butter
For serving
- Powdered sugar
- Maple syrup
- Fruits or berries
Instructions
Prep work
- You can avoid the Prep Work section if you have thick slices of bread. Jump to Making the French toast section.
- Toast the slices of bread in a toaster or a skillet. Do not let the slices change color. Heat on a lower setting for a short while, just until it gets warm to touch on both sides.
- Let the slices cool down for a few seconds on a plate.
Making the French toast
- In a wide-mouthed bowl, add the eggs, cinnamon, sugar(if you are using it), vanilla and salt and beat well, till the mixture becomes homogeneous.
- Add the milk and cream, beat again and make sure that everything is mixed well. Keep aside.
- Heat a skillet or a griddle on the stove.
- Add a little oil or butter and let it warm up.
- Dip the bread in the milk-egg mixture and quickly turn it over and let the other side also soak up.
- Place it on hot skillet and let both sides turn golden brown.
- Repeat till you have cooked all the slices.
- Serve warm with the following: powdered sugar, butter, maple syrup, berries or fruits of your choice. Any and all of these sides will work perfectly.
Notes
- Make sure you don’t keep the bread for long in the egg-milk mixture or the bread will become soggy. It is especially true for the white bread. Just a quick dip will be enough.

I tried this recipe and came out really good. I m alway used to adding sugar to the egg mixture but to see the kids eat without realizing there is no sugar in the custard was a hit. A healthy twist to a hit dish..ThAnks.
